MatterHackers
Technical/Engineering Intern (Summer 2022)
MatterHackers is a Southern California-Based reseller of hardware, machines, and materials for 3D printing and other digital fabrication methods. From June 2022 to August 2022, I worked as one of their Technical/Engineering Interns.
In this role I was responsible for evaluating and providing feedback on 3D printers and materials to assess their market opportunity and determine whether should be added to MatterHacker's product portfolio. In addition, I worked on improving the company's material technical data sheets by creating streamlining their data collection process and standardizing their testing methods.
Overhauling Their Technical Data Sheet
While at MatterHackers, I identified issues and inconsistencies with their technical data sheets. These technical data sheets included incorrect units, inconsistent testing methods, and measured mechanical properties that were unrealistic.
Working with another intern, we developed a proposal to improve and make their technical data sheets the best on the market. The proposal identified key issues that needed to be addressed and what their technical data sheets needed to include. We created the groundwork and streamlined the process for all future interns or employees to easily collect accurate data to improve their technical data sheets. To do this we created:
Documentation that clearly demonstrated how to use the company's universal testing machine.
Standardized 3D printing settings for their 3D printed material samples.
Spreadsheets, software, and documentation outlining the material properties that will be put on their technical data sheets.
In addition to these items, I developed a Python program that automatically calculated the uncertainty values for the mechanical properties that would be included on the technical data sheets. I created formulas using gaussian statistics and uncertainty propagation to easily calculate and include these values on their technical data sheets.
