Ratcheting Bike Lock

Ratcheting Bike Lock

The Ratcheting Bike Lock was a product design that I created with three other students for our Philosophy of Design class. This bike lock was designed to create a more secure locking solution. The design was aimed to combat common tools bike thieves use (bolt cutters, crowbars, hammers, hydraulic jacks, etc.) to steal bikes.

The Ratcheting Bike Lock is a collapsible bike lock that could tightly clamp your bike to a bike rack. Through using a ratchet and pawl mechanism, the U-shaped arm can be inserted into the lock's base without being able to be pulled out. The user then can push the two parts as tightly together as they desire to clamp their bike to a bike rack.

The Prototype

3D Printed Prototype

As a part of this project, I was tasked with designing, CADing, and creating a functional prototype of our Ratcheting Bike Lock. Within 2 days I was able to create a CAD model and functional prototype. I used hand drawn concept sketches and SOLIDWORKS to model to the lock. I was then able to 3D print the majority of the parts and used a CNC router to create the clear plastic cover.
